The Brain Cancer Research Alliance was founded by the Hsu Family when Nolan, a healthy 30-something, experienced an odd sensation - he heard music that wasn't actually playing. This happened more than once, so listening to his body he called his doctor and got an MRI.
The scan revealed that Nolan had a brain tumor – an oligodendroglioma, to be exact.
The world seems to stop when you’re diagnosed with cancer, but you continue – appointments need to be made and decisions arise as you figure out, “what’s next?”. Fortunately, Nolan lived only a few miles from one of the world’s leading cancer institutions, Dana Farber Cancer Hospital. Within days an oncologist was secured and brain surgery was scheduled. On September 7, 2021, Nolan underwent an awake craniotomy to remove his brain tumor. Fortunately again, it was a full resection (meaning the tumor was completely cleaned out) and the cancer only progressed to stage 2, giving Nolan precious time.
A search for treatment options for brain cancer revealed very limited options, with the majority being medicines that were approved in the 1970s. Brain tumors are not rare, but research is underfunded. The amount of money going to brain cancer research is very small compared to other forms of cancer, as it can be too complex, too variable, and too low profile due to lower survival rates.
We’re on a mission to change that. To help raise awareness and increase investment in developing new, novel therapies, the Hsu Family Charitable Fund, now known as the Brain Cancer Research Alliance, was established. With your support, we hope to change the outlook for brain cancer patients and give them not just more time, but a cure.
Since our founding, we have held several fundraising events that have been designed to fulfill our mission. Funds received go directly towards finding a cure. None of the funding goes to administrative costs as our team is comprised of all volunteers.
The mission of the Brain Cancer Research Alliance and the Hsu Family Charitable Fund for Brain Cancer Research is to raise the awareness and funding for brain cancer research and ultimately enable new treatment options. 1.000,000...that is more people than what 10 NFL stadiums can seat. Yet there have been few changes to the treatment options available over the past few decades....
Although over 1,000,000 people in the United States alone have brain tumors (NBTS), awareness, funding and new treatment options have not kept pace with other forms of cancer.
In 2023, an estimated 24,810 adults (14,280 men and 10,530 women) in the United States will be diagnosed with primary cancerous tumors of the brain and spinal cord. (NBTS)
The average five-year relative survival rate for malignant brain tumors is 35.6 percent. (NBTS)
Brain tumors, like other tumors, are caused by changes in the DNA inside cells. DNA is the chemical that makes up our genes, which control how our cells function. These gene changes can be inherited from a parent, but more often they happen during a persons lifetime. (American Cancer Society)
Brain cancer is one of the leading cause of death when compared to all other types of childhood cancers. 5,230 children under the age of 20 will also be diagnosed with a CNS tumor in the United States in 2023. (Cancer.net)
For years, brain tumors have been treated with surgery then chemo and radiation, but we're starting to see new options like targeted therapies become available.
Your donation will help us to continue our mission of supporting our community. Every dollar counts and will make a difference in the lives of those we serve.
Join our team of volunteers and make a difference for the brain cancer community. Whether you can give a few hours a month or a few hours a year to help with events, your time and skills are appreciated.
We host a variety of events throughout the year, including fundraisers, community outreach events, and educational seminars. Check out our calendar to see what's coming up.
